Backyard Campout- Best Boy Birthday Party Ever!

Backyard Campout

If you are looking for a unique birthday party idea for your son, I have the answer! Last year when my son turned nine I wanted to throw him a party that would be something different from the norm. My son loves camping and so I decided to throw him a backyard campout! This party was a huge success, all the kids loved it. My husband and I had a good time also and this is saying something as birthday parties are usually on the stressful side.

I drew and water colored all the invitations myself.
Here is what they looked like:

The inside read:

Your Invited to Camp (our last name) for

(my son's name) 9th Birthday Celebration!

Join us for adventure in the great outdoors...
We'll gather round the fire for stories & s'mores!
Roasting hotdogs. Playing flashlight tag...
It'll be one of the best times you've had!

Saturday, July 11th 2009
6:00 p.m.- 10:00 a.m. (Sunday)
(our address)
(my son's name) backyard

RSVP to Camp Directors (my husband and I)
(our phone number)

I also added in a slip of paper that said:

Please Bring The Following:

Sleeping Bag
Sleeping Pad
Pillow
Flashlight
Warm Pajamas
Change of Clothes

I decorated our kitchen table with checked table cloth, camp lantern, fake bugs, etc.

Scary!

Instead of cake, I made dirt cups! So fun.

I decorated the goodie bags with a camp theme.

My husband prepared for a group of rowdy boys!

We started things off with the fishing game.
We let the kids cast a real fishing pole. They thought that was pretty cool.

My son casting his reel.

More fishing fun!

Baiting the prizes.

We then built the camp fire and prepared for our hot dog roast.

Roasting dogs

We ate!

Me and baby "E" picnicking together.
By the way I was 5 months pregnant here.

Visiting

Making a wish!

Enjoying their dirt cups.

My husband & kids made a tent pinata. I painted it.

Ready for some candy!
By the way- We just had new siding put on our house, it was not even painted here.

This pinata was SO tuff, it would not break!

They broke the string so my husband had to hold it.
(Just Kidding!)

It wouldn't break though...we ended up letting the kids hit it on the ground and then my husband climbed up in the tree and shook out the candy! lol.

After the pinata, my son opened his gifts.

Then we headed out back for "Bear Hunt". We played the "Bear Hunt" song on our cd player.
The kids LOVED this and got nice and hyper afterward.

More Bear Hunt... Yes, my husband is a goof ball! :-)

Pretending the slide is the bridge in the "Bear Hunt" song.

Time for the camp fire!

We told ghost stories by firelight.

Boo!

Time for bed!

And that was the end of the party. The next morning we made french toast for breakfast and the parents arrived to pick up their children.

What is your favorite boy birthday party idea?

AWESOME!

I have dreamed of doing this for my boys, but they were born in February and April (in Michigan). Too cold for camping!

I'm a mid-June girl and camping has always been and always will be my bday celebration of choice.

I'd rather just do the campfire and forget the overnight! Really wear the kids out and then send them home to sleep, still gives the parents a break, but doesn't leave them with over-exhausted kids the next day.

I stayed with my folks when they hosted boy scouts in tents overnight and there were kids coming and going to the bathroom all night long, guess they didn't want to 'go' in nature.

Oh wow! You and your hubby are brave! And, what a blessing that he was such a willing participant. (Some men might scoff at the idea.)

Next time I plan a "camp-over", I'm calling you! ;)

WOW! What a great idea! I never thought of that!! I LOVE the invites you made!!! It looks like they had a blast! I would love to do this for my son. His birthday is in Nov. He will turn 5 and has never had a party since we never had the money to give him one. I told him we would have to do one sometime this year since he didn't do one. I don't want him to be like me and have his first bday party at 24! He would soo love this! What is the "bear hunt"? LOL I thought he was really holding it while they hit it until I read that you were just kidding! You are too funny! Love this post! I'm going to have to take your ideas! I hope you don't mind!!!

Wow, that looks like one fun birthday party! The invites are wonderful. You're quite creative. This is a theme I may try out, with some variations, for my son's upcoming party.
