The more I learn about the dangers of toxins in everyday products, the more shocked I am. I never knew how dangerous and toxic baby mattresses were until recently. Did you know that crib mattresses have been coated with chemicals such as phosphorus, arsenic and antimony. Then most of the mattresses are filled with polyurethane foam with a outer cover made from PVC. Scientist have found that fungus that commonly grows in bedding can interact with these chemicals to create poisonous gases. If a baby breathes or absorbs a lethal dose of the gases, the central nervous system shuts down, stopping breathing and then heart function. These gases can fatally poison a baby, without waking the sleeping baby and without any struggle by the baby. Very scary!

My Natura Experience:

When I had my new baby last fall we switched our old toxic crib mattress out with a healthy organic one and then did the same for my toddler in his crib. My 2 year old recently started using a small pillow at night and has become quite attached to it. The pillow he used was far from a "healthy" one. It was a cheap $5 throw pillow my 10 year old had for years. Seems silly to have a healthy organic crib mattress while having my baby's face against a toxic pillow all night!!!
