Wordless Wednesday- Concert Pianist

A couple months ago my 2 year old son jumped up to the piano and starting playing and singing. I had never seen him do this before! Of course he wasn't playing a real song...but he sure thought he was! I was thrilled to have captured this moment with my camera not only because it was so cute but also because he was wearing one of his Happy Heiney cloth diapers! I entered him into the Happy Heiney Baby of the Month contest in August. Although, he was voted #1 last month, they picked another photo. :-( I re-entered him in Septembers contest and am hoping to win this month! Would you all mind voting for him? It only takes a minute.

Here is the link:
http://www.happyheinys.com/contest/current_contests.php

Remember to rate each baby a 1 and Little E a 5 for the vote to go towards him. Also, you will need to rate each baby until it reaches the end and says, "Thank you for voting" otherwise your vote will not count. Oh, and beware of the impostor picture! Yes, someone tried to copy my picture idea this month, so you will also see another baby at a piano. Some people have no creativity I swear! Anyway, I sure would appreciate this. If I win I will be using the gift certificate to buy Little E some training pants. It is time to start potty training! Thanks everyone and Happy Wordless Wednesday!

Naturepedic Organic Quilted Mattress Topper Review and Giveaway!

*THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED*
Whether you are have a new baby, a toddler or older children it is important to be sure their sleeping environment is a healthy one. Everything from the air quality in your child's room to the bed and bedding they sleep on. Babies and children spend much of their time each day sleeping between naps and bedtime. Naturepedic is a company who realizes the importance of keeping our children safe at bedtime and has made it their passion to offer their customers only the best, high quality, organic sleep products!

About Naturepedic:
(from their site)
Naturepedic was founded by Barry A Cik, a quarter century veteran in the field of environmental engineering. In anticipation of his first grandchild, Barry went searching for a suitable baby crib mattress. Sadly, he found all of the crib mattress offerings completely unacceptable and was in shock at the state of the industry. "I knew all about vinyl/PVC, polyurethane foam, and the various chemicals contained in them and there was no way I was going to put my grandchild to sleep within a few inches of these chemicals."

Barry then set out to find a suitable organic baby crib mattress. "All of the organic baby crib mattresses on the market contained either latex, wool, or both, and were not waterproof... if the mattress were to get wet, it would grow mold and fungus without any effective way to clean it. The wool/latex issue left a lot to be desired considering their known allergenic properties." According to Barry, "the organic baby mattresses were nothing more than miniaturized adult mattresses, which made little sense for babies."

Barry, together with his two sons, set out to found Naturepedic, an organic and non-toxic baby crib mattress company dedicated to providing parents with a better alternative - the first and only waterproof organic baby crib mattress designed with a safe food grade polyethylene cover, and which eliminates the potentially harmful chemicals with which Barry was so familiar.

Today, Naturepedic has a large and growing network of retail outlets across the country and abroad. Due to the success of the No-Compromise™ Organic Baby Crib Mattress, Naturepedic has launched many new models to meet the growing demand for high quality non-toxic baby and children's mattresses and bedding.

My Experience:
I love promoting companies that have a real heart for children, especially children's health. Being a mother to 4 children, I can appreciate this. When I discovered Naturepedic I was impressed with the amount of research and care that goes into each and every one of their products! Naturepedic products are regularly tested for chemical emissions and are certified by GREENGUARD to meet their strict standards for children. Naturepedic carries the most awards and endorsements of any children’s mattress company! That's impressive!

I was sent a twin size Naturepedic Organic Quilted Mattress Topper for review. Wow, this mattress topper is nice! It is thick and soft and makes my daughter's bed nice and cozy for her.

Naturepedic's Organic Cotton:
(information from Naturepedic)

Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton, grown without toxins, synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). Organic cotton farmers have developed creative ways to grow cotton without these chemicals. This is accomplished by the use of natural fertilizers, beneficial insects, and innovative weeding techniques. The organic cotton filling used by Naturepedic is certified by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

The certification standard includes:
  • NO synthetic pesticides
  • NO synthetic fertilizers
  • NO genetically modified organisms
  • NO carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic chemicals
  • NO endocrine disruptors
  • NO non-biodegradable detergents, degreasers, or surfactants

Although my daughter's mattress is not organic (oh, how I wish it were!) I feel good that a nice thick organic mattress topper is protecting her from anything that make creep through. Wordless Wednesday- Two Peas in a Pod!

More pictures from our Labor Day Weekend trip to family camp. Baby J and Little E were such a crack up! They played for the longest time in the Peapod. I have not seen them play this much together before. They were laughing and squeeling and having a blast! It was very special to watch. Oh, and look how Baby J has caught up to his brother! They are only 3 inches apart in height!

Happy Wordless Wednesday!

Diapers and Formula

Tonight I went to Safeway to purchase some disposable diapers and baby formula. While checking out, the checker kept going on and on about how expensive it is when you have to buy formula and diapers. He said he remembers always having to buy them when his kids were babies. I wanted to speak up and say how I use cloth diapers during the day and only use disposables at night! I wanted to say that I DID nurse my baby for 10 months and that I wanted to go longer but he wouldn't do it!

Why do some of the silliest things make us feel like failures as mothers???? I don't need to justify myself to the store clerk!! I don't need to reason why I am a good mom. I know I am doing the best job that I can do. It is out of my control that my son stopped nursing on his own and that my babies cloth diapers reak with ammonia overnight and burn their poor tushes! I can't help these things! Do any of you experience this?

I think as a mom most of us are overly sensitive about what we put on and in our babies. We don't ever want to appear as not doing anything but the best. Sometimes though we need to let go of these "perfect mom" images and know that what really matters is being a loving, caring mom to our children. This does not mean if you bottle feed your baby you are somehow less of a mom or if you happen to use disposable diapers you are being lazy. None of these things matter in the end. Our children will not remember these things. I had to stop myself from feeling guilty tonight and remind myself of these things.

Joy's of Homemaking- Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Bagless Upright Review and Giveaway!

*THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED*
I recently watched a PBS show called the 1900 House which took a modern day family and had them live as they did in the year 1900. One of the things I found most interesting was the vacuum they used back then. It wasn't much of a vacuum at all! This contraption mainly pushed air around, it did not even seem to pick up dirt! We have come a LONG way in the past 100 years haven't we?

I have owned a few vacuums in my adult life. The first one my husband and I owned contained bags. This was always messy and gross to deal with. My previous 2-3 vacuums have been bagless, but shaking the dust and debris out of the filter was almost worse than dealing with a bag! Dirty dust everywhere! I wanted a vacuum that was bagless but would spare my lungs from having to breath in a bunch of junk! I am happy to say, I have found that vacuum and it is so affordable that any family can afford one!

The Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Bagless Upright is under $100 and has a TON of great features!
  • Only 17.8 pounds - light and easy to use with thorough cleaning power
  • Cord Rewind with 27-Foot Cord - no more winding - gently tap the pedal to activate the 27-Foot Cord Rewind and retract the cord to store neatly inside
  • Intuitive Power Controls - conveniently positioned where they should be - right at your fingertips
  • Folding Handle - makes storage a snap, ideal for small storage spaces
  • Fabulous Filtration - rinsable filter and high-quality HEPA filter
  • 27-Foot Power Cord - vacuum a large room without re-plugging
  • No Scuff Bumper - protects furniture when you can't be as careful as you'd like
  • Headlight - illuminates dark corners and areas under furniture for thorough cleaning
  • System Check Indicator - indicates when the filter needs to be cleaned or checked
  • Suction Only Mode Pedal - press to easily transition from carpet to hard floors
  • Easy Belt Change System & Brushroll Access - simply flip two levers to change the belt or access the brushroll
  • 5 Position Carpet Height Adjustment - adjust as needed to clean all flooring types efficiently
  • 8-Foot Stretch Hose - provides instant extended reach
  • Limited 2-year warranty

Included Accessories:

  • Air-Powered Hand Tool - puts hard-to-reach cleaning in the palm of your hand
  • 12-Inch Extension Wand - extends reach of the hose
  • Crevice Tool - helps clean nooks and crannies
  • Upholstery/Dusting Brush - helps get furniture clean

I have been so pleased with the Hoover Windtunnel T-Series vacuum! It picks up so much more than my old vacuum and I am loving the easy empty dirt cup. With the push of a lever all the contents of the dirt cup drop into the trash! No cloud of dust, no yucky filter to shake clean....love it! My other favorite feature is the washable filter. With my old vacuum we had to replace the filter every few months and it cost $20 each time. The Hoover is going to save us money over the years which wins points with me as well. Overall I feel this is a great vacuum for the price!

Toys and Home offers a wide selection of vacuums for you to choose from. Click here to view. Don't forget to check out all the other great items for the home and the kids! Toys and Home offers FREE SHIPPING with EVERY purchase within the USA!!!

Thank You!

I want to say thank you to all of you who are praying for my friend's husband. Your comments were very kind and I appreciated each and every one of them! Please continue to pray. He is still in the same condition as when I wrote the post about him. They did find that his infection is bacterial and not fungal, this is good news! He has shown some slight improvements but also has had a few things not go well. It is hard to say really how this will all turn out. I will keep you all posted. Thanks again for your kind words and prayers. We need a miracle here!

~Beth

Every child loves an adventure!

I LOVE children's books! I am in the Children's Book of The Month Club and have been for a couple years. I hadn't ordered the books I need to fulfill my membership and so decided I better get that done. I ordered a neat toddler activities book and a cookbook for my kids, and then came across a cute book that looked interesting. It is called "Tumtum and Nutmeg". I ordered it hoping it would be something my older two children would like. They LOVE it! I have been reading it to them before bed and they beg for more! Yes, my 8 and 10 year old can read on their own (quite well) but there is something about snuggling up to mom and hearing a story they never grow too old for.

I have to say, I am enjoying the book myself! It is quite adventurous and very charming! It is about 2 mice named Tumtum and Nutmeg who are husband and wife. They live behind an old china cupboard in an old cottage in England. The family who lives in the cottage is a widowed dad and his 2 children. The family is very poor and the mice sneak around caring for the children. We are only on chapter 7 so I don't know much more than this. :-) I was pleasantly surprised tonight to find there is several more of these books! There is a whole website about the books. You can visit it here.

Do you like to read stories to your children at bedtime? What is your favorite children's books to read?

If you could please pray

One of my closest and dearest friends husband is in the ICU at hospital fighting for his life. He has been battling cancer for over a year and with his last round of chemo a little over a week ago, he became very sick. He has developed pneumonia and has a bad infection in his lungs. He was omitted in the ICU this morning and they began treatment. One of his lungs ruptured and he has been hooked up to a ventilator to keep him alive. He is heavily sedated at the moment and the next few days will be crucial.

My family and I visited him tonight at the hospital and will go back tomorrow to give our support. My friend is heartbroken as you can imagine. They have 2 young daughters ages 10 and 11. I can only imagine what those girls must be feeling at this moment. We do not realize how precious life is until it is almost taken away. Each day is a gift. Yours prayers would be much appreciated. Please pray for healing above all, but also peace and comfort for their family. It has been an exhausting past year for them to say the least.

Thank you,
Beth

Joy's of Homemaking- Cuisipro Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker Review and Giveaway!

*THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED*

It's no secret that I love to cook! Ever since I was a little girl I kept a recipe box and tucked away every yummy sounding recipe I could get my hands on. I then started collecting cookbooks. I have been cooking and baking since I was 8. Cooking can be such an enjoyable experience but when lacking the proper tools it can also be a frustration. I love finding new kitchen gadgets that make my life easier! Cuisipro has a wide selection of uniquely designed kitchen gadgets that every homemaker can appreciate!

About Cuisipro:
Cuisipro combines functionality and aesthetics to produce popular, professional kitchen tools. Cuisipro product designs emphasize function; all products either offer an original function or they are functional advancements of existing tools. Many tools are also designed around Cuisipro's signature oval shape, offering consumers comfort and the ability to fit normally bulky tools easily into smaller spaces. The company enforces rigorous testing standards on the highest quality materials, and most Cuisipro tools are warranted for 25 years against defects.

My Cuisipro Experience:
My family loves yogurt! So when the opportunity arose for me to review for Cuisipro I selected to review their line of yogurt making products. I was sent the Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker, extra yogurt jars, Yogurt Starter and the Yogurt Cheese Maker.

My family normally buys organic plain yogurt, but it is not cheap. For a quart we were spending between $2.50 and $3.00. Making your own yogurt at home is much more cost effective. I can buy 1 gallon of organic whole milk for $4.99. I use 1 quart to make my yogurt and in the end spend only $1.25 for one quart of fresh organic yogurt!! Now in the beginning you will need to purchase a yogurt starter. This cost around $3.00. Once you have your yogurt made you will use a bit of the yogurt as your starter when you make a new batch. Making your own yogurt will save your family so much money over time and it is so easy to do!

To make yogurt in the Donvier Yogurt Maker you first need to heat your 4 cups of milk. You can do this on the stove or in the microwave. After heating the milk you add in the thermometer and wait until the milk cools to the "add starter" level. Once the milk has cooled to the proper temperature, pour some of the milk into one of the yogurt jars. Mix the starter in the one jar and then pour into the rest of the milk. From here all you need to do is pour the milk mixture evenly into the jars, add lids, add yogurt maker cover and set your timer! You will want to set the yogurt maker timer for a minimum of 10 hours. The timer will beep when complete. Be careful not to let your yogurt cook too long or it will result in yogurt that is too thick. Once complete your yogurt can be refrigerated up to 3 weeks! You can add fresh fruits to create flavored yogurt or use your yogurt for smoothies or to make yogurt cheese!

Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker Features:

  • Make up to 6 cups/1.5 L of light, creamy, nutritious yogurt.
  • Electric timer has digital LCD countdown display.
  • Warning beep 10 and 5 minutes before automated shut-off at end of cycle.
  • Features settings in half-hour increments, from 4 to 14 hours.
  • Create up to 8 different flavors at a time; use only the freshest ingredients.
  • Includes thermometer & eight 6-oz break resistant, BPA free plastic jars.
  • Temperature ranges from 90°-120°F/ 32°-49°C during yogurt-making process.
  • One year limited warranty.
Here is some information I found on the health benefits of eating yogurt from Dr. Sears website:

1. Yogurt is easier to digest than milk. Many people who cannot tolerate milk, either because of a protein allergy or lactose intolerance, can enjoy yogurt. The culturing process makes yogurt more digestible than milk. The live active cultures create lactase, the enzyme lactose-intolerant people lack, and another enzyme contained in some yogurts (beta-galactosidase) also helps improve lactose absorption in lactase-deficient persons. Bacterial enzymes created by the culturing process, partially digest the milk protein casein, making it easier to absorb and less allergenic. In our pediatric practice, we have observed that children who cannot tolerate milk can often eat yogurt without any intestinal upset. While the amount varies among brands of yogurt, in general, yogurt has less lactose than milk. The culturing process has already broken down the milk sugar lactose into glucose and galactose, two sugars that are easily absorbed by lactose-intolerant persons.

2. Yogurt contributes to colon health. There's a medical truism that states: "You're only as healthy as your colon." When eating yogurt, you care for your colon in two ways. First, yogurt contains lactobacteria, intestines-friendly bacterial cultures that foster a healthy colon, and even lower the risk of colon cancer. Lactobacteria, especially acidophilus, promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in the colon and reduces the conversion of bile into carcinogenic bile acids. The more of these intestines-friendly bacteria that are present in your colon, the lower the chance of colon diseases. Basically, the friendly bacteria in yogurt seems to deactivate harmful substances (such as nitrates and nitrites before they are converted to nitrosamines) before they can become carcinogenic.

Secondly, yogurt is a rich source of calcium - a mineral that contributes to colon health and decreases the risk of colon cancer. Calcium discourages excess growth of the cells lining the colon, which can place a person at high risk for colon cancer. Calcium also binds cancer-producing bile acids and keeps them from irritating the colon wall. People that have diets high in calcium (e.g. Scandinavian countries) have lower rates of colorectal cancer. One study showed that an average intake of 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day is associated with a 75 percent reduction of colorectal cancer. As a survivor of colon cancer, I have a critical interest in the care of my colon. My life depends on it.

3. Yogurt improves the bioavailability of other nutrients. Culturing of yogurt increases the absorption of calcium and B-vitamins. The lactic acid in the yogurt aids in the digestion of the milk calcium, making it easier to absorb.

4. Yogurt can boost immunity. Researchers who studied 68 people who ate two cups of live-culture yogurt daily for three months found that these persons produced higher levels of immunity boosting interferon. The bacterial cultures in yogurt have also been shown to stimulate infection-fighting white cells in the bloodstream. Some studies have shown yogurt cultures to contain a factor that has anti-tumor effects in experimental animals. Yogurt aids healing after intestinal infections. Some viral and allergic gastrointestinal disorders injure the lining of the intestines, especially the cells that produce lactase. This results in temporary lactose malabsorption problems. This is why children often cannot tolerate milk for a month or two after an intestinal infection. Yogurt, however, because it contains less lactose and more lactase, is usually well-tolerated by healing intestines and is a popular "healing food" for diarrhea. Many pediatricians recommend yogurt for children suffering from various forms of indigestion. Research shows that children recover faster from diarrhea when eating yogurt. It's good to eat yogurt while taking antibiotics. The yogurt will minimize the effects of the antibiotic on the friendly bacteria in the intestines.A 1999 study reported in Pediatrics showed that lactobacillus organisms can reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

6. Yogurt can decrease yeast infections. Research has shown that eating eight ounces of yogurt that contains live and active cultures daily reduces the amount of yeast colonies in the vagina and decreases the incidence of vaginal yeast infections.

7. Yogurt is a rich source of calcium. An 8-ounce serving of most yogurts provides 450 mg. of calcium, one-half of a child's RDA and 30 to 40 percent of the adult RDA for calcium. Because the live-active cultures in yogurt increase the absorption of calcium, an 8-ounce serving of yogurt gets more calcium into the body than the same volume of milk can.

8. Yogurt is an excellent source of protein. Plain yogurt contains around ten to fourteen grams of protein per eight ounces, which amounts to twenty percent of the daily protein requirement for most persons. In fact, eight ounces of yogurt that contains live and active cultures, contains 20 percent more protein than the same volume of milk (10 grams versus 8 grams). Besides being a rich source of proteins, the culturing of the milk proteins during fermentation makes these proteins easier to digest. For this reason, the proteins in yogurt are often called "predigested."

9. Yogurt can lower cholesterol. There are a few studies that have shown that yogurt can reduce the blood cholesterol. This may be because the live cultures in yogurt can assimilate the cholesterol or because yogurt binds bile acids, (which has also been shown to lower cholesterol), or both.

10. Yogurt is a "grow food." Two nutritional properties of yogurt may help children with intestinal absorption problems grow: the easier digestibility of the proteins and the fact that the lactic acid in yogurt increases the absorption of minerals. And even most picky-eaters will eat yogurt in dips and smoothies and as a topping.

Making Yogurt Cheese:

I was blown away at how simple it is to make yogurt cheese. You simple add 3 cups plain yogurt into the yogurt cheese maker, put lid on securely, and refrigerate overnight. After you do this simple process, drain off the whey (it will be floating at the bottom of the cheese maker) and remove your yogurt cheese. You will want to store in an airtight container in your refrigerator.

Yogurt Cheese Maker Features:
  • Yogurt cheese is low-fat alternative to cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream & whipping cream.
  • Converts 3 cups of yogurt into 1 cup of yogurt cheese in about 24 hours.
  • Get a thinner yogurt cheese in as little as 2 hours.
  • Sealed container prevents odor transfer and provides storage.
  • Unit consists of plastic container and stainless steel fine-mesh strainer.
  • Dishwasher safe - top rack.

These two products offer healthy alternatives to commercial made foods, are easy to make and will save you money! I am quite pleased with the results and recommend them for every family.

Yes, I'm still alive!

I know, I know...it has been a week since I last blogged! I am still alive, I promise. I started homeschool with my kids last Monday and then we all headed to family camp over the weekend. I have so much catching up to do. With school beginning it also means I have the time controls set on my computer again. I do not need the distraction of the computer when I need to be focused in on school. My computer is now set so I can only go on between 4pm and 10pm Mon-Fri. This makes blogging much more challenging. However, as I have mentioned in the past...if I cannot get all my blogging done within these time frames, then I am blogging too much. My family and responsibilities at home will always come first no matter what!

Most days I don't even get a chance to sit down at the computer until 8pm or later. I had forgotten how busy homeschooling makes me. I really focus on my children during school time and try not to worry about the house or other things, otherwise my kids don't do their work. This also means I have a lot of work to do after school. There is errands to run, cleaning, dinner to make, etc. Life is very full. Thankfully I have an awesome husband to help out or I would probably go crazy! So, now you know where I have been and what I have been up to. I am going to try real hard to get my "Joy's of Homemaking" event wrapped up this week. I have 2 more giveaways for you. I also have a ton of pictures I want to share...first day of school, camp, etc. I hope that you all still love me enough to come back!
