Summer Survival Guide- Teddy Bear Picnic {{Frugal Party Idea}}

Teddy Bear Picnic

If you go down to the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go down to the woods today
You'd better go in disguise

For ev'ry bear that ever there was will gather there for certain because
Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic...

Every year our local parks and rec. department put on a Teddy Bear Picnic free to any child who wanted to attend. As the economy has slumped and budgets have been cut, they are no longer able to do this. My children were so upset. They have gone every year since they were toddlers! "Why don't we put on our own Teddy Bear Picnic!" I suggested. Oh, were they excited! My children and I had so much fun putting this together last summer. It would make for a great, low cost, summer birthday party as well. Here is what we did....

We first sent invitations to our friends and asked that they bring their favorite teddy bear and a sack lunch. This worked great and kept the cost down. Our family provided Teddy Bear Picnic Mix and ice cream cups for a special treat for each child.

I wrapped the Teddy Bear Picnic Mix in individual bags and decorated each one with the child's name and a teddy bear face.

Tomorrow I will post the recipe for Teddy Bear Picnic Mix, stay tuned!

Bean Bag Toss

We started things off with several games. Bean Bag Toss was a lot of fun. Each child had several turns and everyone received either a teddy bear color sheet or a small toy for a prize. We bought most of the prizes at yard sales and the color sheets were free printables from the internet. My husband even made the game board! If you don't have bean bags, they are so easy to make.

Cake Walk

We bought 6 cupcakes from the store and played Cake Walk as you would Musical Chairs. The music of course was the Teddy Bear Picnic song! Winner won a cupcake!

Wagon Rides for the Babies

This was a big hit with the kids. We gave bigger prizes for this game, stuffed teddy bears and a Moon Dough Kit! Again, teddy bears were yard sale finds and Moon Dough was a super clearance item.

After a few games we breaked for lunch. I spread old quilts over the picnic tables.
(forgot to take pictures of the actual picnic part, sorry)

Face Painting

My friend Lori is a great artist and volunteered to do the face painting. She did such a fabulous job! The kids loved their teddy bear faces.

Teddy Bear Check-Ups

While the face painting was going on my husband was "Dr. Fuzzy Wuzzy" and gave all the children's bears a check up. Each teddy bear received a certificate of health, that contained the following:

Puppet Shows

My daughter and her friend performed "Goldilocks and the 3 Bears" and my son and his friend performed " The 3 Little Bears" (variant of the 3 little pigs).

Lastly, we played the fishing game. I bought a plastic shower curtain from the dollar store and let my 2 older children draw water and fish on it with permanent markers. We then used a stick and string for the pole. Prizes were either punch balloons (bought a 6 pack at walmart), bubbles (another clearance item) or stuffed animals (from yard sales).

Honestly, we enjoyed our own Teddy Bear Picnic over the ones we use to attend. It was so much fun and we are hoping to make this an annual event! With not much money and a little creativity, having a Teddy Bear Picnic can be a great way to celebrate a birthday, kick off the summer, end the summer, or just add a little fun to an ordinary summer day!
