Finding a Spirit of Thankfulness

Life.
Is.
Hard.

Wouldn't you agree? Storms and earthquakes destroy homes and lives. Children are hurt by those that should love them. Jobs are harder and harder to find. And all of these things leave us hurting. How can we be thankful when there is so much hurt around us? Sure we have what we need. We aren't going days and days without food and we have somewhere to live. But our hearts are heavy and our minds can't understand why all the hurt is needed?

But during this season we hear all around us, "Be Thankful". And while looking at the struggle of others does make us so thankful to be healthy and safe it can also leaves us with a feeling of despair. How can we find a thankful spirit when times are so hard?

Jesus offers us this comfort,

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation (hard times). But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (extra words mine)

So, even when your life is crumbling around you and nothing makes sense, take heart. Stop. Take a breath. And "have peace".

Colossians 3:15-17
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Even though it is hard. The Bible commands us to "be thankful". But how? In these verses it gives us some very practical ways to find peace and thankfulness.
  1. Be in the Word - Read God's love letter to you (The Bible) and find comfort in His faithfulness and rest in His hands.
  2. Fellowship with Others - Surrond yourself with teaching that helps you to grow deeper in Christ
  3. Sing a Song - Turn on some praise and worship music or even read the book of Psalms (songs of praise) but allow your heart to enter into God's prescence through song.
  4. Give Thanks - Take time to stop and truly tell God how thankful you are for His blessings, faithfulness, and love. It might be hard to start but it is worth it! And once you start, spend time there, lots of time.
This year, though times are hard and we are bombarded with hurt and suffering, let's strive together to be thankful. Truly thankful for each and every blessing that God has given to us. And when we struggle to make sense of this crazy world let's remind ourselves of these 4 ways to truly find........
